Awnings, Part 1 and 2
Awnings do not say much unless provoked
2018
Aluminum, speakers, piezoelectric microphones
Two aluminum freestanding awnings stand back to back, installed on a metal staircase. Each awning is adorned with a contact microphone, capturing the sounds of their environment, such as footsteps, rain, and wind. The sounds are transported into a stairwell inside the adjacent building, mapping the sonic occurrences of the exterior stairs to the interior stairs. As architectural indicator of doorways and windows, the awnings create a false interior with the space in-between the two thresholds.

Awnings with the sound of their own destruction
2019
Aluminum, speaker components, motion sensor
What were formerly awnings have been scrapped and transformed into speaker cabinets. They bear material evidence of their past lives outside as architectural structures. While both temporalities of the forms contain space, the former contained open spaces as shelter, while the latter contains closed spaces, unaccessible from outside. The awnings were recorded as they were disassembled and reconstituted. When one speaker cabinet is approached, the other speaker cabinet begins to play the sound of its partner’s destruction. The two forms maintain a symbiotic relationship, now protecting one another, instead of sheltering others.
